Olympic Gold triple jumper Jonathan Edwards has been presented with another accolade for his collection - Honorary Freeman of the City of Newcastle.

In a ceremony at the city's Civic Centre, Mr Edwards joined the prestigious club whose roll call includes Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer and former South African president Nelson Mandela.

Accepting the prestigious award, Mr Edwards, who moved to Newcastle 15 years ago, said: "This part of the world which was completely foreign to me has become my home and to be recognised in this way by the city of Newcastle is a great honour."

The Lord Mayor of Newcastle Mary Carr said: "It is wonderful to have such an honour today and to be able to have Jonathan in the city.

"It is wonderful to be able to present him with such an award and it is wonderful for the city."

Deputy leader of the council Keith Taylor welcomed Mr Edwards as the North- East's first Olympic gold medalist, adding: "His accomplishment has been enormous.

"He is a positive role model for up amnd coming athletes and gives so much back to the community."

Mr Edwards, who took gold in the Sydney 2000 Olympics, was joined by his wife Alison, their two sons Samuel, eight and Nathan, six, and his parents Jill and Andy.

Afterwards he said he would be hanging his new certificate in his Gosforth hoe, next to the one commemorating his Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Gateshead.
