RESIDENTS may be able to view council chamber proceedings from their homes, if a North-East council's plans to introduce web broadcasting get the go-ahead.
There is little public attendance at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's meetings, but the authority is hoping that introducing web cameras into the town hall will promote interest and participation in local democracy.
However, the cost would be one penny for every person living in the borough, rising to 1.5p next month.
The Internet is already being used by other councils across the country, but Redcar and Cleveland is thought to be the first in the North-East to be considering the proposal.
The Government is keen for local authorities to make use of the Internet and many are looking at ways that "e-government" can be developed.
The issue is due to be discussed by the council executive on Tuesday.
