CHILDREN are to be transported for free to arts venues in an attempt to improve their artistic appreciation.
Derwentside Leisure Services hopes schools will take advantage of its Free Buses For Schools pilot scheme which begins in this month.
Although the scheme is initially being offered to Derwentside schools only, it is expected that those lying just over the district boundary will also be able to take advantage.
Marketing manager Sue Fox said: "Many schools miss out on good quality theatre and arts activities, which are subsidised by the local authority, because they cannot afford the additional burden of transport costs.
"The situation is made even more difficult when they are located a distance away as well as in areas of deprivation where it is felt to be unacceptable to ask parents for a contribution."
The scheme will run for 13 months initially and Derwentside Leisure Development has applied to the Rural Partnership to help with costs. In the long term it is hoped a company will sponsor the scheme.
