THIS year's Music for Youth regional auditions will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17, at Egglescliffe School.

Music for Youth is an educational charity, providing free access to educational and performance opportunities for young musicians through a nationwide series of festivals and concerts.

For some years, Egglescliffe School has hosted the North-East auditions for the festival.

Last year's selection event had to be cancelled because of foot-and-mouth disease restrictions and groups had to send in taped performances for adjudication.

This year, 47 entries have been received from groups from Ponteland, Ripon, Northallerton, Stokesley and Guisborough, as well as schools on Teesside.

A variety of ensembles will be taking part, from full school orchestra to chamber orchestra and from brass bands to wind bands. About 2,500 musicians will be involved.

Keith Hewson, director of music at Egglescliffe School, co-ordinates the organisation of the auditions, helped by members of Friends of Egglescliffe School Music.

Performances will begin at 9.15am and end at 5pm. Admission is free to all sessions, but entry is only permitted between performances. Refreshments are available all day.
