AN industrial area of Darlington could be redeveloped to provide apartments.
Councillors are hoping that Weir Street, off North Road, could become a desirable address after a decision to convert a former warehouse into a residential home.
An application by Neil Massey to change a warehouse in Weir Street into a two-bedroomed home was approved at a meeting of Darlington Borough Council's planning committee.
Councillors applauded Mr Massey's vision to bring new life to the area and said they hoped it would lead to future applications being submitted.
Addressing the meeting, central ward councillor Isobel Hartley, said: "We have walked around this area and we reckon that in the area stretching from the cinema to Red Barn, half of the properties are empty.
"I know of one that has been empty for 12 years. It is apparent that this is a dying commercial area.
"I think that the whole area could be looked at in a new light. Another nine flats are in progress of being converted.
"This council has paid lip service to having people living in the town centre, and here is an opportunity for it."
Councillors made reference to Borough Road, which is a former industrial area that has been developed into a residential site.
Estate agents JW Wood sent a letter to planning officials stating that the proposals would adapt to the property well and conversions for old buildings of this nature were becoming more fashionable.
Council leader Councillor lor John Williams said: "There is no prospect in the wings, that I'm aware, of a comprehensive redevelopment for the area. But if the private sector are willing to take the risk of moving into that area, then I think you should back them up. It is the only way to breathe some life into a historic part of Darlington, and I think we should see how it goes.
"Maybe others will also come forward and a critical mass of development in that area could lift the whole place."
