Darlington Harriers
The sixth and final NYSD Cross Country meeting took place on Sunday at Windlestone Hall on a tough course, hosted by Newton Aycliffe AC.
Bernadette Taylor finished third in the Senior Women's race staying one place ahead of Middlesborough's Carolyn Summersgill, therefore becoming the Senior Women's overall champion.
Results - Senior Men: Nigel Orr (returning after a long lay off) 34th 36.17; Ron Read 65th 38.28; Steve Hutchinson 69th 38.35; Paul Smith 87th 40.51; Ian Barnes 97th 42.41. John Brant pulled out after one lap through injury.
Under-13 Boys: Jamie Rutherford 16th 11.46.
Under-13 Girls: Emma Clifford 18 13.02.
Under-15 Boys: Daniel Purdie 8th 11.16; Theo Panayi 22nd 11.30.
Senior Women: Bernadette Taylor 3rd 19.00; Phillippa Smith 40th 27.34.
Simon Rutherford was the only Harrier taking part in the English National Cross Country Championships held at Bristol on February 23 in snowy conditions. He finished 676th in a time of 51mins 35sec from field of 1220.
At the Snake Lane 10-mile Road race at Pocklington Martin Grainger finished 16th in 56.50; Paul Kelly 37th 58.50; Alison Raw 92nd 63.01.

The final fixture of the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cross Country League was held at Windlestone Hall Newton Aycliffe on Sunday, March 3. The host club, Newton Aycliffe AC, provided an excellent course and conditions were in true cross country mud. The Under-13 Boys won the overall title by easily winning the final event with four counters in the first five.
The club fielded their first Under-13 Girls team of the season and there were some promising performances finishing second team to Richmond and Zetland AC.
The Under-15 Boys also finished second team to Quakers AC, as did the Senior Men when they finished second in division two to Rowntrees AC and finishing second overall but promotion for the club has not been decided until the league committee meet.
Results - Under-13 Boys: 1st Khalil Thompson; 2nd Warren Roberts; 4th Anthony Brown; 5th Andrew Thompson. Team: 1st.
Under-15 Boys: 5th Jalal Thompson 10.04; 6th Paul Smith 10. 12; Matthew Hewitson 10.42; 19th Anthony Forth 11.27. Team: 2nd
Under-17 Men: 9th Adam Ingram 28.08; 13th Peter Gray 31.42.
Senior Men: 27th Stephen Brown 35.32; 42nd John Dennis 36.52; 47th Bob Davison 37.10; 56th Philip Carter 37.51; 67th Victor Sayers 38.36; 72nd Chris Griffth 39.01; 105th John Hewitson 43.41. Team: 2nd in Division 2.
Under-13 Girls: 10th Abby Suffield 12.13; 12th Amy Bunning 12.34; 17th Natalie Cross 12.58; 22nd Natasha Heslop 13.19; 24th Kirsty Mclntosh 23.02. Team: 2nd.
Under-15 Girls: 19th Kelly Turnbull 13.30.
Inter/Jun/Senior Women: 12th Natalle Owens 21.06; 238th Myra MeMenamin 26.42.
l For any runner or spectator travelling to London for the London Marathon a coach will pick up in various points in the North-East. The coach will leave late afternoon on Friday, April 13 for two nights in a hotel in Finchley, transport to the London Marathon Exhibition on the Saturday morning for registration and transport to the start in Greenwich Park on Sunday morning.
The coach returns after the race late Sunday afternoon, anyone interested please call Jeff Rippon on 0191 4134986.
Anyone interested in middle distance or sprints the club hold their training sessions at the Stadium 2000, on Mondays, Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings the club competes in two Cross Country Leagues and various Indoor meetings during the winter months, the club caters for ages from 8 years upwards with no obligation to join the club On Friday evenings 6pm it is come and try night for senior men and women with also no obligation to join, anyone requiring more information on the club should contact the Secretary Neil Stockley on (01388) 776083
