RAILTRACK is being pressed to clean up its act or face legal action over litter.
Fly-tipping and rubbish-strewn embankments have been drawn to Harrogate Borough Council's attention - and the authority has agreed that the problem is significant.
However, despite an informal approach, Railtrack has yet to confirm what action it will be taking to clear up the mess.
More talks have been started with the rail company, which the council hopes will prompt an improvement, particularly on the line between Bower Road and Skipton Road.
However, members of the authority's cabinet will be reminded when they meet next week that companies such as Railtrack have a duty under the 1990 Environmental Protection Act to control litter - and the council has the option of serving an abatement notice.
Councillor Bill Hoult, who represents the public works department, has said that he is concerned Railtrack may not clear up the rubbish - which would mean legal action may be necessary.
Railtrack failed to respond when it was asked to comment on the issue this week.
