Contest marks jubilee year

AN art competition on the theme of the Queen's Golden Jubilee is being organised in Kimblesworth, near Chester-le-Street.

All entries must be paintings, in any medium, up to A3 size paper. There will be three categories - seven to 11-year-olds, 12 to 15-year-olds and 16 years and over. Entry forms must be in by April 24 and the final work by the following month. For an entry form, telephone 0191-371 9060. The competition has been organised by the Flame Community Arts Project and Chester-le-Street District Council

PRICE RISE: Ticket prices for the cinema at Stanley Civic Hall and Consett Empire Theatre have risen. The premium cost of seeing a film in Derwentside will now be £4 for adults and £3 for concessions. Derwentside Leisure will increase the number of economy rate showings, where all admissions are £3. The cheaper screenings will be shown every Thursday, Tuesday and Sunday. Call (01207) 218171 for details.

LUNCH MUSIC: The next in a series of lunchtime recitals taking place at St Cuthbert's Church, North Road, Durham, will be on Wednesday, March 20, from 1pm to 1.50pm. Indian pianist Andrea Vaz, of the Royal Northern College of Music, will perform works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy. Admission costs £4, and refreshments will be available from noon.

ARTS FORUM: A new arts forum has been established in Derwentside. The Voluntary Arts Network, the Derwentside Volunteer Bureau and Derwentside Leisure Services have teamed up to establish the organisation. It is hoped that ideas on how the arts can be improved in the district will be aired at meetings.

CHURCH JUMBLE: A jumble sale will be held at Carrville Methodist Church, High Street, Carrville, near Durham, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm today. Proceeds will add to the building project fund, which is closing in on its target, with work set to start later this year at the 150-year-old church.
