CHILDREN in Darlington are being encouraged to join a nationwide campaign to fight leukaemia by taking part in the Blue Peter Bikeathon.

Hundreds of youngsters and their parents took part in last year's first outing for the event, which raised almost £6,000, and this year organisers are hoping to beat that figure.

The Darlington event will be one of 70 other fundraising bikeathons taking place around the country, to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund.

The nationwide 2002 Blue Peter Bikeathon will be launched on Children's BBC on Monday, when a list of planned locations will be announced, plus details of how to enter.

Maisie Dawkes, chairman of the Darlington and district branch of the Leukaemia Research Fund, said the charity needed as much help as possible.

She said: "Last year's event was a huge success, and hundreds of youngsters took part and raised a fantastic amount of money."

The Darlington Blue Peter Bikeathon will be held at South Park on May 5.

Entry details are available via the Blue Peter website, at www.bbc.co.uk/bluepeter/ or by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope, to Darlington Blue Peter Bikeathon, PO Box 1234, London WC1R 4XA.
