Call for leaders of the pack
A DALES Cub pack, established 80 years ago, could be in jeopardy unless adults step forward to volunteer as leaders.
Two have already stepped into the breach in the wake of a meeting to debate the future of Leyburn's 1st Knights - but two more are vital if the organisation is to fulfil all of its obligations. Training will be provided, although volunteers have been assured an experienced pack leader will always be on hand at Cub meetings. The vacant posts could be an ideal first step for anyone considering a career in youth work. More information on the work of a Cub leader is available on (01969) 624118.
Volunteers plea: People are needed to help with hedge-planting near Northallerton, on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 19 and 20. Conservation charity BTCV is looking after the work at Thrintoft, where a farmer is in the process of converting to organic farming. Anyone interested can call (01748) 811970.
Spring talk: North Yorkshire archaeologist Neil Campling is to speak at Thirsk and Sowerby civic society's next meeting on Wednesday, at 7.30pm, in the Golden Fleece Hotel, Thirsk. He will be discussing the work of the county council's archaeology unit and recent discoveries.
SUDDEN DEATH: Landscape gardener and father-of-nine Colin Dockerty has died suddenly from a brain haemorrhage. Mr Dockerty, 40, of Gladstone Road, Scarborough, was admitted to hospital complaining of a severe headache and died the following day, said his wife, Tracey. He was well-known for his involvement in karting, moto-cross and other motor sports and also entertained as a singer with the Scarborough duo Cartreff.
Music fun: Whitby Rifle Club is the venue for an evening of musical fun on St Patrick's Day - Sunday, March 17 at 8pm. Last Night's Fun will perform various Irish songs. Tickets are £7.50 or £6 for concessions, available by calling Whitby Musicport on (01947) 603475 or visiting Diamond Music, in Flowergate.
Bridge closure: Motorists are being warned that Otterington Bridge, in Newby Wiske, will be closed temporarily from Thursday, March 14, to Monday, March 18, due to repair work. An alternative route will be signed.
