MONEY from the last year's FA Charity Cup Shield is to benefit three charities in a North Yorkshire town.
For the past couple of years the money from the game, which pits the winner of the Premiership league against the FA Cup winners, has been distributed among the minnows of the game who make it through to the first round proper of the competition.
This year, one of the beneficiaries is Whitby Town FC, who were knocked out of the cup by Division Three leaders Plymouth Argyle following a replay on the south coast after they drew one-all in North Yorkshire.
The club was given £7,650 from the FA to distribute to local charities. Chairman Graham Manser said the team picked three groups which would each receive £2,550.
They are St Catherine's Hospice, in both Whitby and Scarborough, Whitby Literary and Philanthropic Society, which is putting an extra wing on the town's museum in Pannett Park and the Dalewood Trust, which is based on the town's industrial estate and helps people with mental handicaps
