STAFF and pupils have won an award for health.
Escomb Primary School, near Bishop Auckland, has scooped an award from a Healthy Schools initiative in recognition of its attitude to the mental, physical and emotional health of pupils.
The primary has introduced projects including a buddy scheme, under which children pair up to look after each other, set up a school council run by children and introduced healthy eating initiatives.
Last week the school emphasised its healthy reputation by holding a week of sport and healthy activities. The school cook prepared healthy lunches, and the caretaker joining in by cycling to work.
The Healthy Schools award was presented to 11-year-old Jennifer Shoulder, who chairs the pupils' school council, on Friday.
Headteacher Keith Taylor said: "This was about healthy eating, healthy minds and a healthy ethos in the school.
"Really, it is an award for the children."
