A conference aimed at improving sexual health awareness will be held on Teesside later this week.

Delegates from around the country will gather at the James Cook University Hospital's education centre on Saturday for the third Teesside Sexual Health Conference.

It will be chaired by Professor John Guillebaud, the medical director of the Margaret Pyle Family Planning Centre, in London, and a world renowned expert on family planning and reproductive health.

The conference boasts high calibre speakers from across the UK including the South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust's own consultant in genito-urinary medicine Dr Abayomi Opaneye.

Various aspects of sexual health will be discussed including cultural issues, Christianity and sexuality, and the sexual health of teenagers and prisoners. Dr Opaneye, who organised the event, said: "This will be a significant event and an opportunity for healthcare professionals to work together with the aim of achieving and maintaining a healthy sexual lifestyle in all age groups on Teesside.

"This is a great opportunity to spread the message about sexual health and to help shatter the stigma involved."
