PEOPLE who do their best to help others are set to be honoured in the first Darlington Mayor's Community Awards.

In the past, the accolades have been known as the Citizen of the Year Awards, but this year three categories have been created to encourage more people to nominate someone who makes a difference to their community.

Readers of The Northern Echo are asked to make nominations for the Community Group of the Year and the Citizen of the Year awards.

Nominations for the third category, positive young person of the year, have already closed and all those put forward will also be entered into the Citizen of the Year category.

Anyone who, individually or in a group, has worked to make a difference to people in their community can be nominated for the awards.

The closing date for nominations is Tuesday, April 30.

The judging panel will meet on May 1 to discuss the nominations, and presentations will be made on May 8.

The overall winner will receive a trophy and two cheques for £100 from the sponsors - the Mayor's Charity Fund and The Northern Echo.
