A YOUNG offenders' institution officer who went to the aid of his colleague during an attack by inmates saw his bravery recognised on Friday.
Kevin Conlin, of Deerbolt Young Offenders' Institution, Barnard Castle, received a certificate of commendation from director general Martin Narey
He told how although his office received many suggestions, it was only the ninth such award he had handed out since becoming director general three years ago.
Presenting Officer Conlin with the award, he said: "Your behaviour that day reflects the Deerbolt I know and staff working together," he said
Officer Conlin was also presented with a decanter, glasses by Deerbolt governor Phil Copple. However, before handing over the awards, Mr Copple told people gathered in Deerbolt chapel about Officer Conlin's bravery in protecting his colleague.
During the incident, last July, senior officer Ian Begg was attacked by two inmates wielding table legs.
"Kevin was the other officer on duty, and he raised the alarm and intervened to protect Ian," said Mr Copple.
Senior officer Begg received an area officer's commendation.
