A BUILDING which has been a village's focal point for more than a century has been transformed as a technology centre.
Church Street Community Centre, known as The Institute, in Langley Park, County Durham, has reopened as an information, communication and technology facility for local people.
It has six computers and printers, which residents are encouraged to use on a drop-in basis. The new equipment, as well as the redecoration of the kitchen area, has been paid for by the Government's Rural Challenge Fund, Derwentside District Council, Esh Parish Council and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.
The centre's committee, from the Langley Park and District Community Association, carried out painting work.
It was officially re-opened last Friday by MP Hilary Armstrong, who was joined by Durham County Councillor Joe Armstrong, Sadia Aslam and Claire Smith, from Derwentside District Council, and members of the community.
Now the voluntary management committee is looking for residents with some computer experience and time to spare to help at the centre, to call community association secretaryAlison Spenceley, on 0191-373 1876.
She said: "It is hoped that all members of the community will use the facility once it is up and running."
