SUMMER activities for North-East children will be boosted by almost £140,000, it is announced today.
The New Opportunities Fund has awarded the sum to two projects in the area, as part of its latest round of grants.
More than £108,000 is being given to Gateshead Borough Council for a summer programme for teenagers.
It aims to engage youngsters in activities including sports, arts, languages, information technology, music and new media, and a range of partner organisations with supply expert teachers and specialist equipment.
Gateshead council's study support consultant, Ann Orfali, said: "We are delighted with this support from the New Opportunities Fund, which will make a significant difference to 13 to16-year-olds this summer.
"An extensive programme is planned that will engage young people in a huge range of enjoyable activities to enrich and broaden their experience, develop skills and help with self-esteem and motivation.
"This is an exciting opportunity to inspire and encourage participation in learning ventures that will have far- reaching consequences."
A major programme of summer environmental activities led by the Dove Marine Laboratory, at Newcastle University's marine sciences and coastal management department, is also being backed by the fund.
It will receive more than £31,000 to run hands-on laboratory activities and field explorations.
Dr Jane Delaney, project development officer at the laboratory, said: "The programme is designed to improve investigative skills applicable to all science studies and to increase self-esteem and confidence.
"With the current threats to habitats and species diversity, it is more urgent than ever that we equip our children with the skills and knowledge to face the conservation challenges of tomorrow."
