TEENAGERS are flocking to a night spot which keeps its bar closed for 'dry' disco sessions.
Once a month, Spennymoor's The Cube nightclub opens its doors to young people between 11 and 16, under an initiative set up through a partnership of police, council youth workers and the club.
So far, two sessions have been held, which have attracted more than 250 youngsters.
Club owner Colin Fletcher said: "It has far exceeded our expectations. The benefit to the town must be colossal. Having 200-odd children off the streets enjoying themselves and having something to do is great."
The project was partially inspired by the success of a similar scheme held regularly at The Queens Head Hotel, in Bishop Auckland, where hundreds of young people converge on Thursday nights.
Entertainment at Spennymoor has been provided by the club's resident disc jockeys and some from radio station Galaxy FM. Only soft drinks are served, although the ground floor bar is open to parents.
Acting Inspector Craig Dixon said: "This is what young people have asked for. I think the numbers speak for themselves."
The next disco will be held at the nightclub next Tuesday, between 6.30pm and 9.30pm.
