STUDENTS and teachers are spending three days sampling the music, dance and food of South Africa.
Sunnydale School, in Shildon, is hosting workshops led by Raymond Takalani Otto, who grew up in the township of Soweto.
Mr Otto has built a career out of opening the eyes of British youngsters to the rich diversity of the cultural life of his homeland.
He opened his visit yesterday with an introduction to South African culture, languages and history, including the dark years of apartheid.
Staff dressed in traditional costumes and pupils joined in an acapella singing session and a drumming workshop.
Dance workshops are being held at the school today, and cookery and folk story telling sessions tomorrow.
Mr Otto, 34, who has lived in England for five years, said: "South Africa is home to a vibrant, diverse culture, where the air is alive with a variety of musical styles, rhythms, dance and colour.
"If I can contribute to building multi-cultural awareness and touch the lives of others through my work, then I will be happy that I have achieved something."
