A DOUBLE from Nicky Tinkler was the highlight of the Derwent point-to-point held at Charm Park last Sunday.

Tinkler completed his double when his mother's Just Jake (Middleton) completed a hat-trick of wins this season in the mixed open.

The Martin Tate-owned and ridden Maitre De Musique (Middleton) cut out much of the running, but Just Jake was given a fine ride by Tinkler.

Held up early, he crept steadily closer over the final circuit. Taking it up approaching the last, he pulled well clear on the flat to win by seven lengths.

John Mackley's For Cathal (South Durham), hard-ridden throughout the last mile by Stephen Swiers, finished a length back in third.

The first leg of Tinkler's double had come when David Ward's Mellenium Gold took the members race. The seven-year-old, who had made good headway to lead three from home, came under pressure at the last but kept on to win by half a length.

The Andrew Pennock-trained Border Glory ran his best race from some time, chasing the winner hard in second under owner John Swiers. Chris Cundall's Final Beat, who cut out much of the early running, weakened back into a ten lengths third.

The Sarah Dent-trained Brighter Shade (The Bluebell Partnership/Hurworth), an unlucky loser at Duncombe Park, gained compensation when taking the confined hunts race under Phillip Kinsella. Brighter Shade, always well placed, led with a circuit to go and went clear from the third last.

The hat-trick seeking favourite Tricky Trevor (J Delahooke/Zetland) had to settle for a three lengths second. He chased hard over the last three fences, but was unable to make an impression on the impressive winner. The Freya Hartley-trained and ridden Fryup Satellite (Sinnington) stayed on well to take a one length third.

The restricted race turned into an exciting battle between the Ian Mason-trained Regal Gale (Middleton) and The Other Eye. The Other Eye made much of the running until joined by the Mark Walford-ridden Regal Gale at the last, where The Other Eye blundered and unseated David Thomas, leaving Regal Gale to come home to win by ten lengths.

The Vicky Parvin-trained Redmire (J Hewitt/Middleton) finished second. Ridden by Richard Wakeham, she kept on at one pace. Abinger (York & Ainsty), owned and ridden by David Wilkinson, made late headway to finish four lengths back in third.

The fastest time recorded in four divisions of the maiden was by Roger Marley's Saxon Gold (Middleton) in the third division. The Clive Mulhall-ridden horse was a comfortable winner. He was in front by the second last and forged clear to win by four lengths.

Trish Russell's Corrie Mor (Middleton) finished second and ten lengths back in third was the Richard Tate-trained and ridden Steppes (Bramham).

In the second division, the Annabelle Armitage-trained Geomar (G Singleton/Sinnington) looked to have the race won when he went clear four from home under Stephen Charlton, but the nine-year-old weakened approaching the last.

The Serena Brotherton-trained and ridden Emperor's Son looked out of the race three from home, but he stayed on strongly in the closing stages and pulled clear on the run in to win by seven lengths.

The Mary Sowersby-trained Mighty Miss (P Clifton/Holderness) made good late headway under Chris Cundall to finish second, one length clear of Geomar.

In the first divison of the maiden, there was an exciting battle between Yashdown (S Morley/Derwent) and Gunner Dream. Ridden by Michael Morley, Yashdown led two from home, but Gunner Dream, ridden by Lee Bates, was going well and had just shown in front when he fell at the last to leave Yashdown to come home by ten lengths.

The favourite Magic Performer (Hurworth) finished second under Clive Mulhall. He stayed on well from the third last without reaching the leaders.

A distance back in third was the Stephen Charlton-ridden John Rich (C Richardson/Holderness), who weakened quickly from the second last.

The fourth maiden went to William Bethell's Dolphin Square (Holderness). He was a very easy winner, pulling clear from the fourth last to win by 15 lengths under C Rae.

The favourite Stevie Dee (S Nicholls/Sinnington) finished second under Freya Hartley, with Shankly (A Barker/Sinnington) a distance back in third under Mark Walford.

l The Holderness point-to-point takes place at Dalton Park on Sunday, first race 1pm.
