Worthington CIU Winter League
Langley Park strengthened their promotion chances after they beat the visiting Newhouse in the decider. This moves the Park to the top of the Second Division, where they hold a one point advantage over Sherburn Village with three matches left. Langley Park went two up with wins from Stephen Renwick and Paul Nord, who put in a 31 break.
Sherburn Village made a great start at Hunwick A with wins from Adrian Twist, Michael Crisp and John Bower. The home side came back strongly with wins from Paul Atkinson and Ian Richardson. This win moves Sherburn one point ahead of Meadowfield, who have a match in hand. There was a shock at the top of the Third Division when title challengers, West Auckland went down in the decider at Crook Belle Vue.
Wheatley Hill A took up the second place in the First Division following their whitewash win over the visiting Willington. Ronnie Peacock, Jack Wright, Dean Bryden, Alan Hall and Dennis Clish won for the Hill.
Spennymoor A moved into third spot with a good home win over Newton Aycliffe, who slipped deep into relegation problems as they are now five adrift of the team above. Ronnie Bateman, Paul Biddle, Karl Welsh and Dennis Dodd scored for the Moors with Mark Howe taking the visitors only point.
Shotton Palms slipped out of the leading teams in the First Division when they had John Armstrong as their only winner against the visiting Fishburn A. Fishburn had points from Brian Quest, John Griffin, Wayne Oliver and John Carter.
Witton Gilbert eased their relegation worries when they beat the visiting Ferryhill by the odd point.
Wingate continued their improved run after making a very poor start to their season when they recovered to beat the visiting Spennymoor B in the decider. Geoff Howe put Wingate ahead but then Kurt McCormack and Wayne Parry moved the Moors in front. Jim Hennessey, who was making his debut for Wingate, levelled the match and then John Mason beat the visiting Alan Rowell in the decider.
Belmont slipped five points behind the rest of the Second Division when they went down in the decider to the visiting Stanley Central.
Crowtrees hopes of promotion to the First Division faded when they went down to the visiting Wheatley Hill B by the odd point..
Bearpark moved four points clear at the top of the Third Division after they only dropped one point at Leeholme A, who had Adrian Forster as their only winner.
Coundon moved up to share third place with Hunwick B, who were without a match, when they whitewashed their hosts at Tow Law with wins from Dennis Payne, Willy Shoulder, Mick McKerry, Frank Nicholson and John Paul Wringe.
Durham City moved up two points behind Coundon after they won by the odd point at Fishburn B.
Sacriston took the first four points in their home match against Leeholme B.
The Presentation Evening will be held at Spennymoor on Saturday, 18 May. As the event has been a complete sell out weeks in advance for the last three years, delegates are asked to order their tickets at the meeting on 28 March.
