THREE Durham choirs begin their bids next week to become the Pop Idols of the choral world.
Durham County Youth Choir, Framwellgate School Choir and Northern Spirit are heading to Newcastle's Tyne Theatre and Opera House for the regional auditions of Sainsbury's Choir of the Year 2002 competition.
They will compete against singers from all over the North-East in the first round of the biennial BBC-televised contest, now in its 20th year.
Durham County Youth Choir and Framwellgate School Choir are no strangers to the event, having both won Sainsbury's Choir of the Day awards in previous years. They will be battling it out in the closely fought youth category.
Northern Spirit, whose members are aged 16 to 24 and hail from Durham and Newcastle, are newcomers to the competition and will sing in the adult section.
The event, on Sunday, March 24, will decide which choirs go through to the national selection stage in June, before a spectacular Grand Final at London's Royal Albert Hall later in the year
