A WOMAN who has dedicated her life to helping others has been honoured.

Edith Dodds, from Darlington, was presented with the Order of St John by the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, Sir Paul Nicholson. The former Cleveland Bridge employee has been a volunteer at the St John Ambulance branch, in Northgate, for 30 years.

Previously, she helped with medical duties, but she is now treasurer and secretary. She received her award at a presentation in the council chambers at Darlington Town Hall.

The Order of St John was founded in the 11th Century and each award is approved by the Queen.
