A SPELL was cast over a school yesterday as children brought the magic of Harry Potter to life in a celebration of World Book Day.
Pupils at St John's Primary School, Darlington, had a wizard time at their own Hogwarts as they became the characters created by J K Rowling for a series fun activities.
Budding Harry Potters made wands, capes, hats and potions for the week-long celebration - but tricks and mischief were kept in check by headteacher Christine Large. She entered into the spirit of things by becoming strict Professor McGonagall, keeping a watchful eye on proceedings.
Other treats for the children included a visit by snowy owl Hedwig, and other birds of prey, designed to enhance their understanding of the habitats and natural environments in which the birds live.
Miss Large said: "The aim was to celebrate World Book Day and to help the children explore the pleasure of books and reading.
"The three main characters in the Harry Potter books were ideal in doing that. Hermione is certainly an excellent role model as far as reading is concerned, and Ron and Harry often frequent the library to research magical creatures."
If the Harry Potter frolics weren't enough, each child received a £1 book token to round off the week in style.
