STUDENTS from a North-East university will be taking part in a three-way sporting competition in Dublin next week.
The University of Durham students will take part in Doxbridge, an annual five-day contest between Oxford, Cambridge and Durham universities, starting on Monday.
Last year, the event was cancelled due to the foot-and- mouth epidemic - but this year's event promises to be bigger, with the introduction of women's football and rugby to go alongside the existing men's football, men's and women's hockey, men's rugby and netball.
Teams from Durham's two newly-formed colleges at the Stockton campus, John Snow and George Stephenson, will be joining Durham-based counterparts in Ireland - and hope to build on the success of two years ago when they reached the final of the men's hockey competition.
Martin Alexander, sports officer for George Stephenson College, said: "Doxbridge promises to be one of the year's sporting highlights. The Stephenson and Snow college teams are prepared for what will be a tough few days of sport."
