A YOUNGSTER who is recovering from brain surgery has been picked as one of seven people from his school to take part in an event marking the royal jubilee.
Matthew Hammond, a year ten pupil at Billingham Campus School, Billingham, has been selected as a runner in the Queen's Jubilee Baton Relay for the Commonwealth Games.
He will join teacher David Jelley, Lucy Plant, Sarah Ward, Rebecca Cummings, Lindsey Robson and Leigh-Anne Duck, from the school, in the event in July.
Each person has been picked on their individual merits.
Leigh-Anne has overcome major heart surgery, Mr Jelley has been a teacher at the school for more than 30 years, Lucy and Sarah are taking part due to their sporting achievements and Rebecca and Lindsey have been picked for their community values and spirit.
Victoria Abbs, teacher at the school, said: "The school and its community are extremely proud of our seven representatives and feel strongly that people should know about their great achievement.
"Out of 5,000 people in Great Britain, seven baton runners come from the school."
Lindsey Robson, said: "I feel privileged to be given this opportunity and I look forward to representing the town and the school in July."
