A NEW online centre was opened on Teesside yesterday under a Government initiative to give everyone Internet access.
Andrew Pinder, the Government's "E-Envoy", opened the centre at Teesside University.
The centre offers both Internet access and email facilities, to help people without access to a computer develop their information technology (IT) skills.
Similar online centres have been opened throughout the UK, in community centres, libraries, or Internet cafes, and are designed to meet the needs of people who have never used a computer before or want to brush up their skills.
Mr Pinder said: "This UK online centre makes the online world available to even more people in Teesside.
"Learning new skills in technology is often a stepping stone to employment, or discovering new leisure and educational opportunities.
"We want everyone to have Internet access close to home and to be able to develop their skills in the friendly and supportive environment you find in a UK online centre. This new centre is helping to make Internet access and email facilities a reality for many Teesside people."
All UK online centres have staff, including two trainers, to offer support and guidance. There will also be workshops available for everyone in the community, such as desktop pubishing and video editing
