A HUNDRED-year-old theatre which faced the threat of closure six years ago is enjoying one of its most successful periods.
Following a critical spell in late 1996, audiences have risen from an average attendance of 36 per cent at Harrogate Theatre to 72 per cent last year.
Mayor of Harrogate Bob Nash, a member of the theatre board, has served up a £25,000 financial tonic by heading a charity banquet and ball at Rudding Park Hotel, near Harrogate.
The event had been expected to raise about £15,000. But targets were broken to boost the mayor's charity, Harrogate Theatre Forward Campaign.
Coun Nash said: "There has been a remarkable change in fortunes for the theatre over the past few years. And with this has come increased box office income, taking turnover up by a third in just four years.
"The theatre has invested this income in larger productions and a more dynamic programming while establishing greater professionalism.
"Meanwhile, the theatre has been taken to rural communities by its outreach programme."
The Oxford Street playhouse is due to announce plans shortly for raising £3m to restore the building.
Last year, the theatre was snubbed for a £2m National Lottery grant, but has secured an increase in its grant from Yorkshire Arts Board, up from £193,900 to £275,000.
