WALKERS in an east Cleveland wood are being given a history lesson.

A new information board at Errington Wood, New Marske, depicts the rich history of the Upleatham hills. It tells the story of the hills from ancient times when tribal societies of the Bronze Age buried their dead on the hillside.

It also shows how miners in the 19th century toiled to extract ironstone from beneath the hill to fuel Teesside's furnaces, and it brings visitors up to date, showing how new woodland management is benefiting wildlife.

The board has been installed in the car park outside the wood in a partnership between Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Saltburn, Marske and New Marske Parish Council, the Tees Forest and the Countryside Agency.
