A NORTH YORKSHIRE student strutted his stuff in a Pop Idol style contest to be named overall winner.

Nathan Kiely, 20, a Durham University student, performed the Spandau Ballet hit Gold to win the competition staged by the nightclub DH1, on North Road, Durham.

Mr Keily, who is from Boroughbridge, was rewarded with £300, a year's supply of alco-pop WKD, and a recording studio session.

He beat off competition from students impersonating such stars as Enrique Iglesias, Whitney Houston and Shaggy in the final round of the competition.

The judges included David Wilson, who reached the final 11 of the real Pop Idol contest, a Joanna Lumley lookalike, and representatives from Galaxy radio, Scottish and Newcastle Breweries and WKD.

Mr Keily said: "I was delighted to win the competition. I'm in a jazz trio and next year I have a place at Guildford School of Acting, so I'm hoping to get a scholarship. The prize money will certainly help."
