YOUNGSTERS received some quick-draw tips from an artist responsible for some of the nation's most outrageous cartoon characters.

Viz artist Steve Donald staged a workshop to round off a week of activities at Durham's Clayport Library, which opened last Monday.

He showed children aged between four and 12 how to capture their favourite cartoon characters using a variety of art materials.

Mr Donald, the brother of Viz writer Simon Donald and the adult comic's founding editor Chris Donald, is pictured showing ten-year-old Tom Sharpe, from Durham, how to give cartoon characters different expressions.

Mr Donald helped the children develop new drawing styles and ideas. The workshop was followed by music by local musicians who performed outside the library.
