DURHAM leave for two weeks in Cape Town today without paceman Stephen Harmison, who dislocated his shoulder during his final game for the England Academy in Australia.
The injury happened because he caught his thumb in his pocket during delivery rather than because of any weakness in the shoulder, and Durham are hoping he will be fit to start the season.
"He should be able to start bowling again in early April, but until he does we won't know exactly when he'll be ready to play," said coach Martyn Moxon.
"We are also leaving Nicky Peng at home for two weeks' rest because he's had a strenuous winter with the academy and the Under 19 World Cup."
The only other member of Durham's 23-man squad who will not be in South Africa is Martin Love, who will shortly be playing in Australia's Interstate Championship final for Queensland against Tasmania.
Love is expected to arrive at Chester-le-Street during the opening match against Durham University on April 13-15.
Durham have added a one-day match against Lancashire, who are also on tour, to their itinerary in South Africa, which involves three other one-day matches and a three-day game against the Western Province Academy.
"We want to enjoy it, but the season starts now and we will be working hard," said Moxon. "Nets are available for those who are not playing in the matches.
"It will be good to have the opportunity of putting into practice outdoors what we have been working on in the indoor nets.
"We have been concentrating on batting technique and game plans and also working with the bowlers. We are trying to get Ian Hunter more comfortable with his action, with his front foot not quite so splayed and his front leg straight at delivery.
"Michael Gough has also been working hard on his bowling and the other spinners, Nicky Phillips and Graeme Bridge, have had two weeks in Adelaide with Ashley Mallett.
"They joined in the South Australia practice sessions. Ashley was pleased with them and has given them a few things to work on."
Norton seamer Mark Davies is in the Durham squad after having his development contract upgraded so that he is now a full member of staff.
