A FALCONRY centre with a reputation for its unusual collection has added another exotic species to the list.
Vultures and a kookaburra already help to keep the crowds entertained during spectacular flying displays at Sion Hill, near Thirsk, along with eagles, owls and falcons from all over the globe.
However, the latest bird may take a little more training.
A full-grown pelican - boasting a 6ft wingspan - can now be found waddling around the grounds, with staff, who hope to have it comfortable with people and able to join the stars of the show in the display arena later this year.
"We're not yet sure if it's a boy or a girl but, whatever, it is quite docile and happy enough around the other birds," said managing director, Ian Ashton.
"I've actually seen another pelican at a display in Thailand so, when the chance to have our own presented itself, I thought we could give it a go."
However, the first task is to choose a name - and the centre is hoping readers of The Northern Echo will help.
"We would like suggestions which could be used for a boy or a girl.
"Whoever gives us the best one will be presented with a free family ticket to the centre," said Mr Ashton.
Suggestions can either be emailed to mail
