Workers lose fight over jobs
STAFF at the town centre Tesco store in Scarborough's Balmoral Centre have lost their fight to keep it open. But hardware store company Wilkinsons, which wants to take over the site, has promised to offer a job interview to workers being made redundant. The store is to close in July despite petitions and pleas from workers and customers that it is the only town centre supermarket easily accessible for pedestrian shoppers. Wilkinsons said it will create 80 jobs when their store opens in mid-October.
