PRIMARY schools in deprived areas of the North-East are to receive £20m in National Lottery and Government funding.
The money will be presented in packages of up to £500,000 to 48 primary schools to improve facilities and create links between schools and their communities.
The awards are part of a national £130m programme called Space for Sport and Arts.
The money will be used in a variety of ways, but in order to qualify for the fund the schools must provide new halls, improve buildings, add to outdoor facilities, including play areas, and upgrade equipment such as lighting.
The money has been allotted to schools by the Government and National Lottery agents, Sport England, and The Arts Council of England.
