THE first police officer at an accident scene, where a man was injured in a hit-and-run collision as he lay on a grass embankment, told a court yesterday how a man suspected of being the driver tried to help after the crash.
Paul Rumney was hit by a blue Ford Fiesta, allegedly driven by Trevor Kellett, 22, on September 8 last year.
PC Karen McManus told Newcastle Crown Court how she approached the accident scene at Claremont Drive recreation area, in Shiney Row, near Sunderland.
She said Mr Rumney complained of chest injuries when she arrived. The officer told the court that Mr Kellett approached the victim after the crash.
Mr Kellett, of Highfield Road, Shiney Row, admits being at the scene after the accident but denies driving the car that hit Mr Rumney.
He denies a charge of dangerous driving. The trial continues.
