POLICE have hooked up with a telephone firm to help victims of crime keep in touch.
Crime victims in Washington will be a phone call away from their named officer thanks to a gift of mobile phones from Orange.
After Northumbria Police detectives visit crime victims, they will now be contactable on a mobile phone.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Byrne said: "When someone has suffered a crime we want to make sure we do all we can to catch those responsible.
"Getting information quickly to officers can make all the difference in detecting crimes and bringing those responsible before the courts.
"These phones will make it much easier for victims of crime to keep in contact with officers and be kept up to date with the progress of their case."
Previously, victims were given a central telephone number to contact the officer investigating their case.
But in some instances it could take time before the relevant officer would get the message because of shifts, meetings and annual leave.
It is hoped that if successful this scheme can be extended.
Orange has also provided Pay as You Go vouchers. Customer services manager Sarah Burns said: "Customer service is top on our list of priorities at Orange and this initiative will also enhance the service offered the public."
