An all-girl cast from Durham High School is performing the first school production at the Gala Theatre.
They are staging Wor Day Out, a North-East version of Willy Russell's Liverpudlian play Our Day Out. Scouse accents have been changed to Geordie and regional landmarks like the Angel of the North will be featured.
The school, renowned for its music and drama, welcomed the opportunity to perform to a wider audience in the flagship Gala venue.
Headmistress Ann Templeman said: "It is an enormous privilege to be able to take advantage of this marvellous venue. We are all thrilled to see High School drama have such a high profile."
More than 90 girls aged 11 to 18 are taking part in shows this Friday and Saturday evenings with a Saturday matinee.
Head of drama Kate Roberts said: "It is an amazing cast; the girls are exceptionally talented. It should be a realnight to remember."
