A PLAN by youngsters to encourage other young people to take part in activites off the streets has been unveiled.
The Dene Krew, an organisation based on The Dene Estate near Medomsley, has worked with the Durham County Council youth offending team to design a new shelter and sports recreation area.
The youngsters have submitted an application to Derwentside District Council to develop an area behind Denecrest on the vandal-hit estate.
The Dene Krew hopes to obtain sporting facilities and equipment, including a basketball court, and build a shelter on the council-owned site.
One objector to the scheme has complained that the area has already been subjected to vandalism and the scheme could mean the situation deteriorates.
But council planning officer Simon Le Jeune has recommended approval for the scheme.
He said: "The land is not put to any particular purpose and I noticed that the land had been used for bonfires and general tipping. These proposals would channel funding for sporting activities directly in the local community and provide a much needed outlet for youngsters.
"Although the recreational area would be a focal point for youngsters, I would not expect these proposals to lead to excessive levels of anti-social behaviour."
Susan Butler of the youth offending team is working with the Dene Krew youngsters on their idea.
She said it was too early to release details, but a publicity launch was being planned.
Derwentside District Council Development Control Committee will discuss the proposal at Consett Civic Centre on Thursday, at 2pm.
