Southampton substitute Jo Tessem grabbed an equaliser two minutes from time to leave Sunderland in deep relegation trouble.
The Wearsiders appeared to have marked their 100th league game at the Stadium of Light with a priceless victory when Republic of Ireland international Jason McAteer scored with a great left-foot shot in the 62nd minute.
But Saints fought back for a thoroughly deserved point.
Southampton had looked much slicker in the frist half and might still have been two or three goals up before McAteer broke the deadlock.
Sunderland, booed off at half-time, made a tactical substitution after the break when Swedish international Joachim Bjorkland replaced the unhappy full-back George McCartney and the home defence looked a lot tighter.
Brett Ormerod should have claimed his 20th goal of the season after dribbiling round goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen only to push his shot across the face of goal in the 59th minute.
The visitors equalised when a left-wing free-kick from Anders Svensson was headed home from close range by Tessem, who had replaced striker Kevin Davies in the 72nd minute.
