POLICE and housing officials are investigating a woman's claims that she suffered a six- month campaign of terror.

Sarah Matthews, of Tilery, Stockton, has had her windows smashed, fireworks thrown at her puppy, and is verbally abused and threatened in the street.

The 45-year-old woman's car has been stolen and burnt out and her flat has been burgled. Last week, bricks were thrown through windows of her home while she was out.

The council tenant, who lives alone, said she is too afraid to stay in her home any longer and has begged Stockton Borough Council to move her.

And despite telling the police the names of the people she believes are responsible, she said there has been little progress.

She said: "These people call me a whore when they see me in the street, but they never say or do anything when I am with any friends or family, so the police told me there is not enough evidence to press charges. It is just my word against theirs.

"I am at my wits' end. I just don't know where to turn for help. I don't see why I should have to move house, but it seems the only alternative to make a fresh start away from the people who are making my life a misery."

A police spokeswoman said: "We have received complaints from this address over the last couple of months, from a lady complaining of criminal damage and harassment.

"Police have taken full details and we will be investigating the matter."

Michael Cook, housing manager for Stockton council, said: "We are investigating the situation and will work with the police to try to resolve it." He said anyone suffering harassment or violence who felt unsafe in their own homes could be provided with emergency temporary accommodation arranged through the police
