ONE of Darlington's best known family firms has expanded with the purchase of another well-established motor dealership.
Peugeot dealership company Williamson Motors, a third generation family firm, has bought Nelsons, of Spennymoor, for an undisclosed sum.
The move will involve "substantial investment" in the future of the Spennymoor site.
Williamson Motors has been in business for 63 years, established by Edwin Williamson and passed down through his son, Michael, to the founder's grandson, Simon, who is now managing director.
The firm employs 35 people at its Darlington dealership, in Chesnut Street.
Finance for its latest purchase was provided by Barclays Bank and advised by Latimer Hinks Solicitors.
Simon Williamson said: "Nelsons has long been known as an excellent dealership with a fine reputation in the local area, and we are delighted that all the existing staff are staying with us for the future.
"Williamson Motors has been looking at expansion possibilities for some time, but it was a case of identifying a deal that was right for us, so this was an ideal opportunity."
Vincent Nelson, of the Nelson family, which set up the Spennymoor firm 23 years ago, will be staying with the Cambridge Road dealership, along with its 15 staff.
Mike Airey, relationship director at Barclays, in Darlington, said: "As a successful local company with a firm financial base, we have been encouraging the directors of Williamson Motors to look at expanding the business.
"The purchase of Nelsons is clearly the opportunity they have been waiting for, and Barclays is pleased to have provided the finance for the deal, which will result in a significant increase in turnover for Williamson Motors and enhance their presence in the area."
The Darlington firm has received the Peugeot award of the Guild of Golden Lion Dealers five times in recent years, and was recently awarded Investors in People status
