A package of improvements has begun at a shopping area in Hartlepool.
The first phase of the work on Brierton shops involves measures to improve the appearance and boost security.
A canopy overhanging the front of the shops is being removed to make the inside of the shops lighter and improve their appearance.
A security fence and gate will be fitted around the service yard at the back of the shops, and dusk-to-dawn lights are to be installed.
The work also includes building a parking bay to ease congestion.
The first phase of the work, which is costing £30,000, will take about four weeks to complete.
It is part of a larger project over the next year, which will involve further consultation with shop owners and residents.
The project is being spearheaded by the Owton Rossmere Partnership, which is using Single Regeneration Budget money from the Government to revitalise the Owton and Rossmere areas of the town.
Stuart Green, partnership manager, said: "These improvements will tackle the security problems which have affected the shops, and so help make the area better and more secure for the neighbouring residents.
"The shops provide an important local service for residents and the work that we are doing will help them to remain viable."
