A SENIOR judge has paid tribute to a former Lord Lieutenant of Durham, who died this week.
Judge Denis Orde, who retired last year as presiding judge at Durham Crown Court and is now a deputy circuit judge, said the death of David Grant would be a "sad loss".
Mr Grant, 80, was lord lieutenant of the county for nine years and president of the Darlington chemical company Darchem.
The judge said: "He was a very good friend to this court and a very good friend to me. He was probably the hardest working lord lieutenant this county has had."
The judge said Mr Grant, who was awarded a CBE in 1980, was "completely sympathetic" to, and willing to help, the underprivileged.
He added: "His death is a very sad loss to me, this court and the county generally."
Mr Grant's funeral will be held on Saturday in St Cuthbert's Church, Durham, at 2.30pm.
