THE first road is about to be laid on a big housing development in Darlington.
Developer Bussey and Armstrong has applied for planning permission to build a road and roundabouts on the West Park estate site.
The road will run from the roundabout at the top of West Auckland Road and through the new estate to the proposed health centre and housing development.
The half-mile road will then rejoin the existing road network just north of Minor's Crescent.
Darlington Borough Council's planning department will decide whether to allow the new road to be built in the next few weeks.
Reclamation work has just started at the development on the 55-acre site of the former Darchem chemical works.
The biggest single development site in the town will include 700 homes, an NHS acute mental hospital and a new ground for Mowden Park Rugby Club.
Building work is expected to start on the scheme next year.
