ONE of the region's residents celebrated her 100th birthday yesterday and shared the secret of her long life.
Mary Leonard, who woke up to a telegram from the Queen, said that for a long and happy life people should be content with what they have got.
She celebrated her birthday with brother John, 80, sister Wynnie Hutchinson, 92, and residents at Victoria House, Stockton.
As well as a party for friends and family, she was presented with a bouquet by Sophia Bostock, 11, and Alex Sprott, ten, both from St Cuthbert's School, Stockton, where she used to be a pupil.
Miss Leonard, who received a medal from the Pope for undertaking voluntary work for more than 60 years, has lived in the town all her life. She moved into Victoria House two years ago, after living in the Yarm Road area.
She left school at 14, and worked at Strikes Garden Centre as a florist, before setting up a drapery shop in Northcote Street, Stockton. She did not retire until she was 70.
Miss Leonard has never married, but said she had kept herself busy with her voluntary work and shop.
She said: "I have had a very busy life and have enjoyed it a lot."
Her tip for longevity is: "You should be content with what you have got and not go running after rainbows."
Victoria House team leader Pat Smith said: "Mary is a very independent lady and everybody loves her."
