A £10M plan to build a heritage centre commemorating the life and voyages of Captain James Cook is to go before planners for a second time in a bid to win approval.
The ambitious plan aims to convert a derelict locomotive shed alongside Whitby's upper harbour into Cook's World - close to the spot where his famous ships, Endeavour, Resolution, Adventure and Discovery, were built 300 years ago.
The Captain Cook RN Charity Trust's original plans were vetoed by Scarborough Borough Council planning committee last year due to lack of details on traffic schemes and parking.
Engineering consultant W S Atkins has since carried out an in-depth study on traffic in Whitby, and Robin Treacher, spokesman for the trust, said it would be submitted along with the planning application, to be considered in May at the earliest.
The scheme is scheduled to include workshops, and arts and crafts centre, shops and a base for youngsters to learn boat building skills, as well as the visitor centre.
