A NORTH-EAST man was seriously ill in hospital last night after falling 300ft on Britain's highest mountain.
Andrew Phillipson, 61, of Newland Road, Newcastle, was found by rescuers at the bottom of a gully at Ben Nevis, in the Highlands, on Tuesday morning.
Mr Phillipson fell from Observatory Ridge during a solo climb.
Terry Confield, of Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, said: "He fell from at least 300ft, hitting snow and sliding. The slope is not smooth at all but he was lucky that he missed a big rock which sticks out of the face."
Last night, a spokesman for Southern General Hospital, Glasgow, described his condition as serious but stable.
