THE idea of a new headquarters for Richmondshire District Council was given a tepid welcome at a meeting.
Richmond Town Council was assured no decision had been taken, when it had its first opportunity to comment on the proposal this week.
However, even though many members serve on both administrations, the suggested move from Richmond to the new business park in Colburn failed to win unanimous support.
The town's business community has already expressed grave concern about the impact moving would have on Richmond's economy.
The town is still battling to win back trade lost to Tesco at Catterick Garrison when the Mercury Bridge collapsed in 2000.
Councillor Jane Metcalfe, who chairs the district authority this year, confirmed she is among those urging senior officers to consider other sites in Richmond, including land near the cemetery on Reeth Road, the district council depot on the Gallowfields Trading Estate or an expansion at Swale House.
Councillor Oliver Blease admitted his own disappointment.
"I feel like standing up and asking if the last person to leave Richmond would please turn out the light,'' he said.
