A NORTH Yorkshire village will be honouring the Queen's 50th year on the throne with a special floral tribute after all.
Catterick Village residents Paul Davies and Major Bob Martin were a little disheartened to find that a grant for hanging baskets to brighten up the main roads could be harder to come by than they had expected.
Undeterred, they put up posters around the village, asking for voluntary donations instead. Within weeks, they had raised £2,000. Individuals, businesses and local sports teams all made contributions.
Some sponsors have requested that their hanging baskets are dedicated to the memory of relatives who have died, while others will publicise companies or organisations which have helped with the costs.
However, there is still room for more, and additional donations can be left at the village post office or at the Quality Fare supermarket.
Mr Davies said he hoped particular streets around the village would also contribute.
"We hope this can be the start of an annual display," he said. "The set up costs mean this year will be the most expensive, but we may be able to do the same in future for a few hundred pounds.'
